PROUD TO BE A CALIFORNIAN. California Senate Bill 54, also known as the California Values Act, was signed into law in 2017. It limits the ability of state and local law enforcement to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. The law is intended to protect immigrants and build trust between the immigrant community and law enforcement. SB 54 (De León, 2017) designated California as a sanctuary state, restricting the use of state and local resources for federal immigration enforcement.
